Program Requirements

About the major

Africana Studies provides an opportunity for students to study the legacy of Africa and the African Diaspora and to explore other issues concerning race and class. A major in Africana Studies consists of 27 semester hours. The student earns a Bachelor of Arts degree.

About the minor

A minor in Africana Studies consists of 15 hours, including AFR 190, 363, and at least one other AFR course numbered above 300.

Departmental honors

Majors may earn Honors in Africana Studies by fulfilling the following requirements: a) attain a grade point average of 3.50 in the major, b) complete a research thesis under the direction of an Honors advisor, and c) have this thesis approved by a faculty committee consisting of three instructors who are formally affiliated with the Africana Studies Program.
