Garland CrawfordDr. Garland Crawford served in the U.S. Army as an ordnance officer from 1997-2001. He left the Army for graduate school and earned his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biochemistry at the University of Kentucky in 2007. He was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health until 2010 and has been teaching at Mercer since 2011.

Professional Interests

Dr. Crawford primarily teaches general chemistry, biochemistry, and a food chemistry general education course. He has previous taught in the Great Books sequence.

His interests in the scholarship of teaching and learning are focused on how students learn, integrate, and communicate technical information. He is also interested in developing ways for students to integrate knowledge across traditional academic disciplines.

His research in the laboratory focuses on the regulation of the enzyme OGA, which is tied to critical cellular pathways in metazoans. During his time at Mercer, he was worked with over 15 undergraduate researchers, who have gone on to a wide range of professional endeavors.
